Carnival in the Province - Verona TBA Verona's carnival is nearly 500 years old, and it celebrates the end of a terrible famine of 1531. After an uprising by the city's poor at the unavailability of bread, the wealthy joined together to distribute grain and flour amongst the hungry. The Carnival's father, Tommaso Da Vico, commissioned an act that dictated that bread, wine, butter, flour and cheese would be provided to residents on the last day of the carnival for the rest of time.
